TRANSCRIPT (Not perfect!)

Lexi Ulmer I obviously did grow up in a network marketing household and so I always had that entrepreneurial example and I went to college and I got my degree in public relations and immediately.

.
Lexi Ulmer got a job right outside of college doing social media marketing for real estate agency.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And I love to I was working for, but it just didn't work, for me it just wasn't a fit.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Especially with the example i've always had you've always been home dad was a pilot so it's just not like the traditional nine to five who's gone two to three days a week and then home with all this attention on us the rest of the time.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And that was just it kind of felt like the graveyard for my soul was sitting at a desk every day and.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Doing that it just wasn't a match for me, and so I started doing social media marketing working from home taking clients.

. .
Lexi Ulmer But even that I loved being home and kind of getting to do whatever.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Be my own boss, but that wasn't a fit either I ended up moving to nashville was kind of pursuing music and that fell apart and kind of moved back into the entrepreneurial side of things, you know your th full of fun adventures like that and ended up.

. .
Jackie Ulmer i'm kind of saying that my s just so you know.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Do we ever know what we want to do, never fully.

. .
Lexi Ulmer yeah so now i've kind of taken a dive into sales and you know i'm still in that phase, a bit of kind of looking around like what's it ultimately going to be for me, but i'm i'm figuring it out a lot more now it's definitely something.

. .
Lexi Ulmer As an entrepreneur as a creator i'm very creative I have that type of a brain and yeah just figuring it out, and I have the perfect example so.

. .
Jackie Ulmer What would you say and I love that you shared all of that don't you know there were pieces of that and just so everybody knows, this really is not pre scripted I gave her a list of a few questions just kind of her story in that.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And then, as I do, as an interviewer and his real life goes, you know we're just kind of allowing it to unfold so listening to you say that yes, you're living in nashville went out there to pursue music and I.

. .
Jackie Ulmer appreciate that you said that kind of fell apart, although we don't really know if it fell apart it's just.

. .
Jackie Ulmer on the backburner, perhaps because I know that you're still writing and doing that type thing, so what that opened up for me and listening is, what do you think.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Do you think there's any part of and then we'll get to the your childhood, but do you think there's any part of that.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Your experience with watching an entrepreneur and living through that that makes you more of a risk taker more of someone who can say i'm going to try this and i'm going to try that and I might try this tell us about your thought process, maybe that goes into that.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Definitely, I feel like being an entrepreneur is a lot more fluid than being somebody who would work like a nine to five like.

. .
Lexi Ulmer it's not necessarily going to look the same day to day and in five years, you might be doing somewhat the same thing, but it's going to be completely different than it was five years before because you've progressed or kind of switched.

. .
Lexi Ulmer lanes, and so I definitely think.

. .
Lexi Ulmer that's a thing, especially now, I feel like people, even if you do work a traditional nine to five people don't stay with the same company in the same way, you know your dad worked with the same company from start to finish that's not as much a thing anymore.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And so I definitely think it's allowed me to not panic as much about not feeling like.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Fully settled, but just kind of like figuring it out as it goes very fluid.

. .
Jackie Ulmer I love that and i'm going to deviate again just maybe quick advice that you might have for a more traditional parent with a child who says.

. .
Jackie Ulmer I don't want to go to college, which I know you did and finished your degree, but your brother did not you know what what advice would you have in terms of helping them understand to relax and that you may not have it all figured out but.

. .
Lexi Ulmer yeah true relax for sure I feel like a lot of the time opportunity, you know we talked a lot about energy in the law of attraction and I really am a believer in that, but.

. .
Lexi Ulmer I feel like energy when you're contracted like that you're freaking out and you feel stressed and pressured to do this or do that or make a decision or.

. .
Lexi Ulmer earn all this money or be rich and famous all this it kind of contracts you, and so you kind of deter opportunities and they won't present themselves as much, whereas if you're relaxed.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And just kind of focusing on yourself and open to opportunities they're more likely to present themselves to you it's kind of like scared money don't make money you know.

. .
Jackie Ulmer I do like that I love that.

. .
yeah.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Alright, so let's back up a little bit let's talk about your childhood.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And you don't have to worry about hurting my feelings, because I made it I did a lot of things right, but I made a lot of mistakes too and i'm always happy to own those so let's talk a little bit about your childhood growing up.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And what my business kind of looked like and felt like to you from early and then on up.

. .
Lexi Ulmer yeah um well, I saw she did send me a few questions and one of the things was like.

. .
Lexi Ulmer good and bad thoughts on it in hindsight and honestly i'm not just saying this, I can fortunately say like I don't really have.

. .
Lexi Ulmer bad memories, I had a very charmed childhood that doesn't mean I got out unscathed but like there was nothing glaring you were always home.

. .
Lexi Ulmer I could tell that I had a very charmed lifestyle, I remember when we bought the boat and we would go to like have a Su and do all that fun stuff we got the beach house.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Like but you were always there it wasn't like Oh, we have all this fun stuff but we never see mom because she's off busy, it was very much a lifestyle business like you were there with us every step of the way getting to do those fun things.

. .
Lexi Ulmer So those are really my memories, the only.

. .
Lexi Ulmer I remember when I would want to go down to like a friend's house, so you probably remember i'd get a piece of paper and write, can I go to a list as house and just hold it up for you and give me the thumbs up or thumbs down, but I didn't mind that.

. .
Lexi Ulmer At all you are always there so really no no bad memories.

. .
Jackie Ulmer it's kind of funny I have one memory that is a mommy guilt thing that i'll which i'm totally over it now, and you and I have laughed about it before and you'll remember if you're not knowing what it is right now you'll remember when I tell you, but I remember once.

. .
Jackie Ulmer I don't know if I was on a conference called zoom didn't exist and and.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Maybe YouTube did maybe I wasn't shooting a video but I wasn't even like on camera, but I was on the phone talking whatever and you were trying to tell me something and I remember you grabbing my face and like turning me to look at you and going mom look at me i'm talking to you.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Now I don't even remember that.

. .
Jackie Ulmer I do, and I remember thinking oh my gosh loser mother of the year i'm going to get the award for loser mother of the year, but so that that was a good lesson for me to like seriously try to be present.

. .
Jackie Ulmer In really present in those times when I need to be present, and maybe I did, maybe I did, maybe it's a case where if I would have just said.

. .
Jackie Ulmer hey lexi give me five minutes, let me finish what i'm doing, because we all know how that is you're right in the middle of something you've got a thought process going on.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And for somebody to tap you on the shoulder it completely takes you out of that so maybe it was just a good tool to learn to communicate better, but I I definitely do remember that part of it.

. .
Lexi Ulmer it's a classic you're your worst critic.

. .
Jackie Ulmer yeah yeah because if you don't even remember that then that's good.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Not in the slightest.

. .
Jackie Ulmer that's good so you had some other fun opportunities to as you grew up grew a little bit more you got to travel with me go to conventions speak and even sing on stage so tell us a little bit about those experiences.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Yes, i've always loved being the Center of attention, and so I did I remember you always had kind of this like larger than life persona in my mind, because we would go to your conventions and.

. .
Lexi Ulmer I would be there and everybody wanted to talk to you and we would get up to go to lunch, and I would finally like i'm going to go get food because you're getting stops every five seconds of you there.

. .
Lexi Ulmer But yeah I got to do so much fun stuff I remember taking a helicopter ride over the strip in Las Vegas because he qualified for that.

. .
Lexi Ulmer All of the VIP dinner is one of your companies asked me to write a song to sing on stage when I was pursuing music and.

. .
Lexi Ulmer I got to speak at so many of them and truly even outside of the business side of things just the personal travel united we started taking the mother daughter trips, when I was in probably fifth grade I think San Francisco is the first one, and that was just really special so.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Was and then we went off to New York and New York can't became our place.

. .
Jackie Ulmer yeah so many fun things took a cruise or Mediterranean cruise I mean a lot of really cool things it's true.

. .
Jackie Ulmer So kind of kind of moving forward with I remember the funniest day ever, and I think it was about a month.

. .
Jackie Ulmer fact I think I counted up, it might have been days after you graduated and went to work in your big girl job and i'm air quoting For those of you just listening big girl job because I remember you calling me and being like.

. .
Jackie Ulmer mom this big girl job thing like this is not working for me they want me to be at work like eight to noon Monday through Friday.

. .
Jackie Ulmer This is not going to work.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And I remember thinking whoa in all the history of the world, I can't imagine any boss ever been so demanding that they would want that, but I loved it, it was so classic.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And you know, so it was literally like one month in probably less probably took you that long to call me and say help i'm trying to figure this out.

. .
Jackie Ulmer But I remember that, being one of my greatest days, because I remember thinking, yes, that entrepreneurial spirit is born in my daughter and it's not going to go away and I love that so.

. .
Jackie Ulmer What was your What was your first thought around.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Being your own boss like.

. .
Jackie Ulmer A skill set that you could do as a solo printer like hanging your own shingle.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Well, I just in general I knew that I could do it because you've done it I.

. .
Lexi Ulmer you've always been home so like that's, not even a stretch for my mind to wrap around like being home working.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And I had done social media for you i'm very creative I can create graphics i've used social media, personally, I know how it works and so that was and that's what I was already doing so I was like well what if.

. .
Lexi Ulmer I go to them and say hey i'll freelance and then try to pick up some other people too and that's exactly what I did.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And even though i've moved away that was even a very fitting decision to move away from the social media side of things, and just figure out what for me is a lifestyle business and something that really.

. .
Lexi Ulmer supports the essence of who I am because I feel like work should almost be play and you need to find something that you love to do and making money is great, but I feel like if you really love to do something, and you pursue it from that state, the money will just kind of follow.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And that's one of the things that I absolutely love about the millennial and the gen Z generation really and truly because and i've said this to you before.

. .
Jackie Ulmer I remember when your group of friends went to maine and you bought an airline ticket I you had flight benefits still through your dad and.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And that whole thing, but I remember you buying an airline ticket and I remember thinking to myself wow I love that this generation puts experiences and that type of memory over collecting things.

. .
Jackie Ulmer generation was all about.

. .
Jackie Ulmer money in the Bank, a good retirement program security buy a house.

. .
Jackie Ulmer which I think all of those are important i'm not trying to downplay any of those but it's kind of like that saying that you know, on the day you die you don't like have a u haul behind the hearse.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Pulling you through you know valuable stuff that you've collected that you take with you, the only thing you take with you in in any type of sense really are the memories, the memories, because when you look around the stuff is great, but you don't go to bed with the stuff and you don't.

. .
Jackie Ulmer You know, feel close to the stuff or whatever it can certainly.

. .
Jackie Ulmer You know, make your life more pleasant and enjoyable and all of that, but the experiences are where it's at and I love that I love that your generation is.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Really captivated with creating lifestyle, creating an a good income but creating the experiences that go with it, because you know what I mean we're living through it right now we're months in almost months in by the time this goes live will be months from the day we really.

. .
Jackie Ulmer got the news the pandemic and shut down the US anyway.

. .
Jackie Ulmer which was march of we're still in the midst of that and I think we've all realized how finite time is how finite so many things are and how the world can change on a dime in a second, and so you know it's good to be creating those experiences now.

. .
Lexi Ulmer it's True, the world is changing there's no doubt about that I feel like there's no better time to make a change take a risk, whatever because the whole world is doing it look at the stock market.

. .
Really.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Our latest glance at it was really positive, so I hope everybody.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And, of course, you know, whenever by the time you actually see this who knows, but because it can change on a dime let's talk a little bit then about how you've pivoted in a short amount of time you've been out of school three and a half years.

. .
yeah.

. .
Jackie Ulmer yeah.

. .
Jackie Ulmer So how what's that look like, I know that you've.

. .
Jackie Ulmer you've made some shifts it's like you said when you first started, you were focused on social media.

. .
Jackie Ulmer As an independent contractor as a solo printer doing a lot of that and you've made a number of shifts along the way, so tell us a little bit about that, and what kind of led you down the path of going those different routes, yes.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Well i'm very much a creative person, and so, ultimately, I know I will find some sort of success, whether it's creating a course something like that, especially for.

. .
Lexi Ulmer healing like heart centered healing of all whole variety of things, and so you know time is money and I value my time, now more than ever, and so i've kind of looked around and been like what can I do.

. .
Lexi Ulmer That will earn me money but also free up my time and to me that's sales direct sales of some sort I can do it from home, I can have the free time to pursue other things I can live my life, I can say yes to things.

. .
Lexi Ulmer and

. .
Lexi Ulmer It might continuously evolve life is fluid no hard and fast rules.

. .
Jackie Ulmer You know, it is and and.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Again, your generation versus my generation.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Your generation gets that a whole lot more.

. .
Jackie Ulmer You didn't have this specific experiences you've already shared but so many do have that experience of watching their parents.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Either both grinded out working for a job they grew up in daycare and i'm not i'm not shaming or.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Trying to add more guilt to anybody who was in that situation, we all do the best that we can that's one of my mantras that.

. .
Jackie Ulmer we're all doing the best we can, with what we have to work with right now, including me that's one of my mantras and I remind myself of that with people with myself to give myself grace compassion all of that.

. .
Jackie Ulmer But as children growing up with that a lot of your generation, I know, and again that's not your experience but have said I don't want that.

. .
Jackie Ulmer I I know what it was like to come home to an empty House or wonder who was going to pick me up when I was sick at school or why wasn't my one of my parents ever on the on the field trip and.

. .
Jackie Ulmer You know some of that kind of stuff and again i'm not harming anybody I don't want anybody to fill a guilt a pain guilt or anything like that, because, as we talk about this.

. .
Jackie Ulmer But it has led your generation to value that time and say I want something different, a cubicle isn't going to work for me I don't want that.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And, and I love that so does you do, you tell me about like your friends your circle of friends, how many of your friends would you say share that same passion, as you do and how many are more traditional and tell me about conversations you ever have about that.

. .
Lexi Ulmer I feel, like all of my friends in my direct circle.

. .
Lexi Ulmer feel that same way, I have some that do have traditional jobs which right now nothing's fully traditional because people are working from home, and so it kind of is like there's a lot more freedom and I think that will shift.

. .
Lexi Ulmer I don't think people will be in the office as much moving forward it'll be kind of a hybrid.

. .
Lexi Ulmer But, so I have friends in those positions and then I also have a lot of friends who are still working serving jobs because they're not willing to be.

. .
Lexi Ulmer tied down to something they love that they can just request off whenever tips there's great money to be earned and tips, and it kind of gives them that freedom to pursue other things, and ultimately figure something different out.

. .
Lexi Ulmer it's again it's a changing world, why not be the one to break the cycle and start something new for your family moving forward.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Right it's so true, I know, one of my role models that i've watched starting an Internet business, she was very accomplished in the fitness world.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Very accomplished worked on Wall Street, and when she decided to take her business online she quit all of that and got a job bartending in New York City, this was a year ago, because she said, you know what I can totally control my time I can make enough money to.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Support myself, I can control my schedule.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And I can be on my peak performance like in the middle of the day when I can work on my program my brand and building my business on my time that matters.

. .
Jackie Ulmer I don't care what anybody says like what you went from Wall Street to back to tending bar what's wrong with you and now she's an eight figure annual income earner has been on.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Richard branson's island on his private plane, you know that type stuff so it's like oh.

. .
Jackie Ulmer wow look at me kind of thing that's not what she was trying to do, but it's like you have to be sometimes you have to most often you have to be willing to let go of what's called impression management.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Worrying too much about what everybody else thinks about you or says about you, which by the way, they're not thinking or talking about you as much as you like to think they are and really dialed in on you and where you're headed.

. .
Lexi Ulmer shoe I feel like your happiness is no one else's business they think it's weird you quit your Wall Street job so does that make you happier than your Wall Street job was making your life's too short to be unhappy yeah.

. .
Jackie Ulmer So, when you say and think of lifestyle business to find that for us.

. .
Lexi Ulmer A lifestyle business to me, is where you don't wake up on Monday morning and sluggishly go to the coffee machine and feel change something you don't want to be doing it's waking up and feeling it's not living for the weekend.

. .
Lexi Ulmer feeling purpose felt and you love to do it again it's like play, and you can travel with it, and you can call the shots.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And it just integrates beautifully your time your passion your productivity, I heard something the other day.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And I loved it kind of has become what I think of as lifestyle business, it was on another podcast I was listening to.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And she said you're here for four reasons to learn he'll grow and contributes.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And we mostly get really caught up in the contribution side it's like what's my purpose what am I going to do, how am I going to contribute i'm going to make all the money.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And we kind of ignore that the learning and the healing and the growing that's typically some adversity that we faced a really hard challenge that we work to overcome.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And that's where we get our most profound wisdom and that becomes our contribution, whatever that was like for you it's like you wanted to be home with your kids and so you found a way to overcome that and then this became your contribution and for me we'll see but it's mostly like.

. .
Lexi Ulmer kind of being filled with anxiety and like going going going and then finally relaxing all those expectations that I had for myself and kind of letting life surprise me and then that will integrate into my work and that's my lifestyle.

. .
Jackie Ulmer I love that so where did you get your.

. .
Jackie Ulmer desire to pursue personal growth and development, how did that come into your life.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Will you.

. .
Lexi Ulmer You know, we have always I think my first dive into anything spiritual or metaphysical was those Abraham hicks books that you get like Sarah Sarah books.

. .
Jackie Ulmer or books.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Together I think they were called and that kind of introduces you to law of attraction, you would talk about it a lot growing up, you have all the books in your library, so I would slowly pull them.

. .
Lexi Ulmer I read the secret and that's kind of like feels like forever ago because it's progressed into something so different now.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And kind of just aligned me more with myself and i've done all of it i've read all the self help books and taking the bits and pieces that work for me, but it definitely came from you we've always talked about that.

. .
Jackie Ulmer it's kind of funny I was on a.

. .
Jackie Ulmer It was a Facebook group, and it was, and it was really geared around personal growth and development and somebody was asking how do I, how do I get my kids I always loved that how do I get.

. .
Jackie Ulmer My kids air quotes get my kids to pay more attention to this and I chimed in and said, you know what you do it through osmosis.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And I kind of had a rule and you may or may not remember this, but my rule was, as I was driving around being hockey mom tennis mom.

. .
Jackie Ulmer You know all the different driving things that you do as a mom I had a and going off the mountain because we lived in that small mountain Community up in Lake arrowhead so.

. .
Jackie Ulmer We had to drive off the mountain to go to costco target trader joes do all of our big shopping and my rule was %.

. .
Jackie Ulmer The Channel on sirius and % was going to be my stuff personal growth and development that was back in the day of CDs.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And I know you I can remember, I know you listen to the slight edge and a number of different things.

. .
Jackie Ulmer and

. .
Lexi Ulmer Her me go for no.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Well, for know yep and then we also listen to the color thing the different personalities, I remember that one specifically and then you saying on stage at the real savvy success event and you got to say something to Randy gage What did you say to him.

. .
Lexi Ulmer He said i've spent my whole life listening to you, and now you get to listen to me.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And he was in the back of the room going, yes, yes I love it and he and he did so it is kind of funny but I didn't really think about it at the time, I really it was more of a selfish mode of me saying.

. .
Jackie Ulmer You get % of the time and I get % of the time and I didn't really think through the fact that you were going to be absorbing that.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Through us absorbing that through osmosis but you were and that's what I was sharing it was like just.

. .
Jackie Ulmer You know, be fair, but be firm and your kids will, and I was sharing the story of that and there were so many moms who were like oh my gosh Thank you, I never really thought about that and that really has played a huge role.

. .
Jackie Ulmer yeah.

. .
Lexi Ulmer very grateful for it, I feel like I if I wouldn't be operating very differently now if I wouldn't have been exposed to that for worse, so i'm very happy.

. .
Jackie Ulmer yeah and I love that you're doing that because I know we've talked about this a lot, so I predate social media online you grew up with social media, I was I started online before.

. .
Jackie Ulmer I mean i'm older online than YouTube and Facebook and instagram and certainly snapchat now clubhouse and all these different ones.

. .
Jackie Ulmer But the reality of it is, I think all of us struggle.

. .
Jackie Ulmer I don't know a person out there that doesn't struggle, a little bit with comparing alia and unworthiness and am I good enough and.

. .
Jackie Ulmer All of those things on social media as we scroll and we look at everybody else's a role and we compare it to our B roll.

. .
Jackie Ulmer So talk a little bit about that from your generate your age group your generation your generation has had it harder than anybody because of bullying.

. .
Jackie Ulmer And you can't get away from people you they show up in your newsfeed you know what everybody's doing on the weekend that maybe you were left out of and stuff like that talk a little bit about that, if you would.

. .
Lexi Ulmer yeah it's true I, I also think it can be hard to try something and go on social media and feel like a fraud kind of.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Like if people have done what you're doing before you, you feel like you're like copying them and people know.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And it can be stressful even if you're bringing your own thing to it, and so I think it's important to just put the blinders on i've gone on many i'm following sprays i'll probably have to do more in the future, as I do, new things.

. .
Lexi Ulmer But it's also again your happiness is no one else's business it's doing the work to release other people's opinions of you, because it really doesn't matter at the end of the day.

. .
Jackie Ulmer it's true yeah you are what matters for sure.

. .
Jackie Ulmer The most important thing, so kind of a final question as we begin to wrap up what thoughts, do you have for children of entrepreneurs and thoughts, do you have for moms and dads specifically.

. .
Jackie Ulmer The again the good in the bad like releasing the guilt or things positive things that you can do just share with us some thoughts on that.

. .
Lexi Ulmer yeah I think kids aren't as fragile as parents like to think and so you might think you're neglecting them or whatever, and it probably isn't really being perceived that way at the end of the day.

. .
Lexi Ulmer And for kids I would say, take full advantage of it, the example being set learn as much as you can.

. .
Lexi Ulmer enjoy having mom home or dad home or whoever it is and also just don't put so much pressure on yourself, especially first starting out because I think it can be easy to feel.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Like you should have accomplished everything yesterday and to kind of hurry up and wait sort of thing, and I think just relaxing into it and letting it unfold, naturally, is the best way to go.

. .
Jackie Ulmer Perfect great advice How can people learn more about you, how do they find you if they might want to learn more about you perhaps hire you to work with them.

. .
Jackie Ulmer and help them and support them, because you have a lot of different roles share with us where to find you and maybe some of the support roles that you currently offer as of this recording anyway.

FLEXsocialmarketing.com

. .
Lexi Ulmer Create their forums, I do podcast editing kind of anything like that sales can be a closer, if you have a program is a whole bunch of different things.

. .
Jackie Ulmer it's good and I love that you're specifying that because virtual assistant is like a broad umbrella media is a broad umbrella these days it's not I mean there's so many different moving parts to it, give us your email address again because I think you left a little piece out of it.

. .
Lexi Ulmer Oh, did I it's FLEX social marketing at gmail COM yeah the.
